who we are

The Kirikian Armenian School is one of the more prominent Saturday Armenian schools in the NY/NJ/CT tri-state area, and one of the highpoints of the St. Thomas Armenian Church parish. The School, established in 1961 with 20 students and five teachers has grown over the past 50 years, to approximately 140 students, twenty-one teachers, professional staff and scores of volunteer parents and alumni.

The school spares no expense in providing quality education by offering double sections for each grade level, one for the Armenian-speaking child and the other for the non-Armenian speaking child. Both classes follow the same curriculum, but the non-Armenian Class is taught conversation as well.

Aside from learning reading, writing and conversation, history, geography, literature, grammar, etc., there are dance classes, music/chorus singing, and religion taught each Saturday. The special area teachers are all proficient in their specific area and religion is taught personally taught by V. Rev. Fr. Papken Dz. V. Anoushian, Pastor of St. Thomas. Mrs. Ani Capan, the Principal of the School, has been instrumental in recruiting many talented teachers and those who specialize in their particular subject.

Classes

The unique part of our school is the fact that starting with the first grade we have two separate sections in each grade, one for English speaking and the other for Armenian speaking children. Both sections use the same books and finish the same program.

The instructor in the Armenian speaking section uses only Armenian in the classroom and the one in the other section uses both languages for the benefit of the students. Students in the English speaking section have special periods to practice Armenian conversation and learning the language through the use of computer programs for the Armenian language. This way, students with the same needs are in the same classroom and receive the most benefit out of our curriculum.

Curriculum

In addition to reading, writing and conversation practice, our school provides instruction in Armenian grammar, history, geography, religion, dance, songs, literature and starting with the 4th grade Armenian Church sharagans, Children's Choir. Religion is personally taught by V. Rev. Fr. Papken Dz. V. Anoushian, Esq., Pastor of St. Thomas Armenian Church.

The curriculum is enhanced through assembly productions and plays of prominent Armenian figures or historical events, knowledge contests such as Armenian "Jeopardy," poetry contests, art projects based on Armenian culture, etc.

Youth Choir is also a part of the curriculum. Students who learn the Armenian Church sharagans have the opportunity participate in the Divine Liturgy on Sundays and attend choir practice sessions.

Armenian Celebrations

Celebrations of important dates and holidays are conducted throughout the year in many creative ways. Students plant flowers in commemoration of Martyrs Day, wear costumes for Paregentan fairs, attend Communion Church Service and Breakfast at Easter time, celebrate Christmas with parties Armenian and American, Mother's Day, etc.
